Interview: Morita AdvErL EVO unites all advantages of laser systems

· EuroPerio 8: Professor Anton Sculean, Director of the Clinic of Periodontology, University of Bern, Switzerland, on Morita’s new Er:YAG-Laser AdvErL Evo

EuroPerio 8, the largest conference in periodontology and implant dentistry worldwide, once again presented the latest research and innovations in both disciplines in London from 3-6 June. Within the scope of this congress, Gold Sponsor Morita held an exclusive symposium with lectures by specialists in periodontology and peri-implantitis therapy. In an interview, Professor Sculean, Director of the Clinic of Periodontology at the University of Bern, Switzerland, describes the advantages of Morita’s new Er:YAG-Laser AdvErL Evo.

The high-tech AdvErl Evo laser made by Morita, a Japanese family-owned company, already took center stage at IDS 2015 in Cologne, where it was presented as an innovative and extremely gentle treatment option for periodontal, implantological and endodontic surgical procedures. In his lecture “Erbium:YAG Laser in the Treatment of Periodontal and Peri-Implant Infections”, Professor Anton Sculean, Director of the Clinic of Periodontology at the University of Bern, described the decisive advantages gained with the Er:YAG laser in the treatment of periodontitis and peri-implantitis. Morita’s Er:YAG-Laser AdvErl Evo, for example, makes possible comfortable and highly precise procedures without excessive development of heat or vibration that could affect the tissue. And, it is almost painless. As such it is optimally suited for treating hard and soft tissue effectively and gently.

Question 1: Which clinical indications are covered by Er:YAG lasers in the treatment of periodontal and peri-implant infections?

Professor Anton Sculean: “In particular the decontamination of infected root and dental implant surfaces.”

Question 2: How do Er:YAG lasers differ from other lasers used in the treatment of periodontal and peri-implant defects?

Sculean: “Er:YAG lasers are the only systems that can remove hard and soft bacterial deposits mechanically without major damage to the root surface. In addition, we have seen biostimulatory effects as well as significantly faster healing and osteoanagenesis.”

Question 3: What, in your opinion, are the most important advantages of AdvErL Evo?

Sculean: “This device unites all the positive properties of laser systems and, at the same time, dentists will find it much easier to use. Another considerable advantage is the round application tip which makes it easier to access deep or narrow areas.”

Question 4: Can you briefly describe how infected tissue is removed with Morita’s AdvErl Evo?

Sculean: “The first step is mechanical root surface debridement – in other words, hard and soft bacterial deposits are removed. Subsequently, the pocket epithelium and coronal part are removed. This is followed by biostimulation to improve wound healing and osteoanagenesis.”

In periodontal therapies, the AdvErL Evo Laser not only removes inflamed tissue but also efficiently fights the resident bacteria; this nearly precludes the risk of bacteremia. In implantology, the laser’s outstanding features can be used effectively in peri-implantitis treatments: it eliminates both the inflamed tissue and contaminated concrements on the implant surface without adversely affecting osseointegration.
